Why Your WordPress Site Fails Core Web Vitals (And What to Do About It)

Core Web Vitals are a direct Google ranking factor. Most Irish WordPress sites fail them. Here's what causes poor performance scores and how to fix them — with real results from an Irish client.

A construction company in Ireland called us after losing a tender to a competitor. The prospect had visited both websites before the meeting. They said ours “felt slow and outdated.” The other site was fast and clean. The prospect went with them.

The business owner told us this as context — he wasn’t sure if it was real or post-rationalisation. We ran a speed test on both sites. His loaded in 9.3 seconds. The competitor’s loaded in 1.4 seconds. The prospect wasn’t making it up.

A slow website doesn’t just frustrate visitors. It costs deals.

What Core Web Vitals are and why they matter for rankings

Core Web Vitals are Google’s three main performance measurements. They’ve been a confirmed ranking factor since 2021 and Google has made clear they intend to weight them more heavily over time.

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): How quickly the main content on the page loads. Google considers anything under 2.5 seconds “good.” Most Irish websites we audit are between 5 and 12 seconds.

INP (Interaction to Next Paint): How responsive the page is to user interaction — clicking buttons, filling forms. Pages with too many heavy scripts fail this.

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): How much the page jumps around as it loads. Images without dimensions, late-loading fonts, and injected ads are the main culprits.

What causes slow WordPress sites

WordPress is fast when configured correctly and slow when it isn’t. The most common causes of poor Core Web Vitals on Irish WordPress sites:

Unoptimised images — A single homepage banner image at full camera resolution can add 3–5 seconds to load time on mobile. This is the most common issue we find and the easiest to fix.

No server-side caching — Without caching, every page load hits the PHP/database stack from scratch. On a shared hosting environment, that can take 2–4 seconds before a single byte is sent to the browser.

Render-blocking scripts — Plugins that load JavaScript in the page head prevent the browser from displaying anything until those scripts finish downloading. Proper script deferral moves them out of the critical path.

Bloated page builders — Some page builders generate enormous amounts of CSS and JavaScript regardless of what’s on the page. This adds significant weight to every load.

Slow hosting — Shared hosting environments have inconsistent server response times. If your TTFB (Time to First Byte) is over 600ms, your hosting is a bottleneck that optimisation work alone can’t overcome.

What we achieved for one Irish client

We ran a performance optimisation sprint for an Irish B2B company whose site had a Lighthouse score of 58 and an LCP of 10.8 seconds. After the sprint: Lighthouse score hit 100, LCP dropped to 0.6 seconds. In the six months that followed, organic traffic increased 142% and their Google Ads conversion cost dropped 35% — the same traffic was converting better because the experience was faster.

How to check your Core Web Vitals right now

Go to PageSpeed Insights, enter your homepage URL, and run the test on mobile. Look at the three Core Web Vitals scores. Anything in red is failing Google’s threshold and actively hurting your rankings. Anything in orange is borderline.

If you want to understand what’s causing the failures and what fixing them would take, we offer a Discovery Audit for €1,500 — a full performance and technical SEO review with every issue identified, prioritised, and costed. The audit fee is credited against the project if you proceed with optimisation work.

And even when you pass Core Web Vitals at launch, scores decay. New plugins, traffic spikes, and image bloat all chip away at performance over time, which is why ongoing WordPress maintenance matters more than a one-off speed audit.
